Learn Korean with Korean Grammar in Use Intermediate PDF: Tips and Tricks

Korean Grammar in Use: Intermediate provides quite a step up from the previous book. There is TONS of new vocab and plenty more grammar points. As such, the book really ought to be studied at a slightly slower pace than Korean Grammar in Use: Beginner in order to learn and remember as much as possible.

When browsing for textbooks while in Korea, I specifically was looking to find a grammar book which would explain points in detail, as I could never find really great explanations on the internet or in the textbooks which I already had.

Along with the first volume, Beginning, which covered the major grammar points learned in most introductory (Levels 1 and 2) Korean courses, this Intermediate volume covers the major grammar points learned in intermediate (Levels 3 and 4) Korean courses. Together, they form a full-scale, comprehensive Korean reference grammar. Realizing that most other Korean grammar books target beginning learners only, the authors have answered the needs of intermediate level students who want a more systematic way to focus on grammar. In addition, this series serves as a general Korean reference grammar that can be used by Korean language instructors both in Korea and abroad who experience first-hand the difficulty of teaching Korean grammar.

-TOPIK Levels 3 & 4 Grammar! Collects the introductory grammar points normally taught in Levels 3 and 4 at most university affiliated and private language institutes. In addition, this volume includes practice pattern exercises to help students prepare for the TOPIK Intermediate level.

-Target Grammar Primary and Secondary Meanings At a Glance! Organizes grammar points not as a list that simply must be learned, but as integrated groups of grammar points with similar meanings, usages, and written forms to better illustrate their differences and provide learners with the various meanings, restrictions, and other things to keep in mind when learning them.

-Dialogues Full of Real-Life Uses of Grammar! Students will learn to make their own dialogues that use the target grammar points in ways most commonly used in real Korean conversation. The dialogues used are not simply sentences constructed for the purpose of illustrating grammar, but rather examples that reflect practical, real-life Korean conversations.

-Easy Individualized Use by Both Students and Teachers! Not only can students more easily master a variety of difficult Korean grammar points, instructors can also benefit by having an accessible, easy-to-use reference for explaining such difficult aspects of Korean grammar in class.

Reviewed by: Pathfinder in Korean Minju Kim (bio) Pathfinder in Korean, by Institute of Language Education of Ewha Womans University. Seoul: Ewha Womans University Press, 1999. xviii, 159 pp. The Institute of Language Education of Ewha Womans University recently published Pathfinder in Korean. This is the institute's second series of Korean textbooks since its first twelve-volume series (six textbooks and six workbooks) was published in 1990. The fact that this institute has been one of the top Korean teaching programs alone is enough to prompt us to pay special attention to the publication of Pathfinder in Korean. The new series consists of five levels; for each level, one textbook and one workbook are provided. In 1999, the first two levels of the series appeared, the "beginning" and the "low intermediate" levels. This review will focus on the beginning-level textbook and workbook.

Pathfinder in Koreanis designed for "adults who begin to learn Korean as a foreign language" (quoted from the back cover). As its Korean title, Mali thuinun hankwuke(Mouth-opening Korean), indicates, this text adopts the communicative approach, aiming to "increase learners' communicative competence in real-life situations" (quoted from the back cover). Hence, the main contents of the book involve communication activities in various situations. Besides this, we also can see traces of the situational approach in that at the beginning of each unit, the authors introduce the key grammar points and sentence patterns that are relevant to the theme of the unit. Such preparation helps students to get more easily involved in the communication activities; this can be considered one of the strengths of this book.
